German qualifier Daniel Altmaier, ranked 186th in the world, surprised seventh-seeded Italian Matteo Berrettini to reach the last 16 matches at Roland Garros on Saturday.
Altmaier, 22, triumphed 6-2, 7-6 (7/5), 6-4, becoming the fourth man to reach the round of 16 on his Grand Slam debut since 2000.
The victory also means an unexpected financial windfall for the German who is guaranteed to earn at least $ 221,400 by reaching the bottom 16 after earning $ 173,600 in his six-year career.
“I didn’t know if I was going to be able to play in Paris because I had been injured the previous week during a tournament in Aix,” said Altmaier.
“But the doctor gave me the green light so I’m very happy to be here. The tournament continues for me and I am happy to continue. ”
Altmaier faces 10th seed Roberto Bautista Agut and 17th seed Pablo Carreno Busta for a place in the quarter-finals.
