With France back on high Covid-19 alert, Burger King creates turbulent air safety parody

After devastating France (and other European countries) throughout the spring and summer, it looked like the coronavirus crisis was finally under control, with the number of deaths and new infections declining following lockdown restrictions.

But sadly, the infection rate is increasing again across Europe, including France, which has seen an exponential increase in cases in recent weeks. As a result, pubs and bars in Paris are closed as the country seeks to bring the pandemic back under control. In July, Burger King, through the agency Buzzman, found a clever way to reassure customers of its health and safety measures as the chain began to reopen after the lockdown. He reinvented Burger King as an airline and enlisted French comedy actor Fred Testot as the pilot to narrate a safety demonstration, which included warning customers not to confuse hand sanitizers with ketchup.

The concept, and Testot, are back to reflect the latest turn of events and reassure customers that the chain is adhering to Covid-19 safety guidelines.

In the new location, a Burger King restaurant (redesigned as an airplane called ‘Burger Klean’) shakes violently as it passes through what the pilot says is a ‘new area of Covid turbulence’.

But as the plane stabilizes, the general message is, “Don’t panic, the entire crew is on top and can keep you safe” with masks, gloves and hand sanitizer.

The social and TV campaign launched on Tuesday and also promotes Burger King drive-thru, delivery, and click and collect as options for those who wish to avoid eating.

The work is in keeping with Buzzman’s light and ironic tone for the brand. Last week, Burger King in Belgium went in search of a Michelin star in a press, social media and outside campaign of the agency.
