Lucas Bravo plays Gabriel in ‘Emily In Paris’
In Netflix Emily in Paris, Bravo confronts Gabriel, a Parisian chef who is interested in the recent importation Emily Cooper (Lily Collins). In an interview with Manny the Movie Guy, the actor spoke about what drew him to the role.
“I just had an audition,” he explained. “And just working with (director) Darren Star to start, [he’s] such an icon. Being able to have that American perspective while working in my hometown. And just Lily Collins, Patricia Fields and all those icons that would bring me closer to what this industry is for me.
The actor noted that the chemistry between the actors that audiences see on screen are genuine. He said most of the time the cast ended up having fun on set.
“It’s all about the fun at the end of the day, and that was exactly what it was,” Bravo said. “I came on set, and we had such a chemistry that it made this experience exactly what I expected when I started this.
What does he think of his role as Emily In Paris?
When we talk about Emily in Paris, Bravo has revealed just how layered his character, Gabriel, really is.
“I think he spends the time of his life where he’s kinda lost,” he told Manny the Movie Guy. “He wants to succeed on his own. He doesn’t want any help, and at the same time, he has responsibilities, and he feels a little emasculated by Camille.
He also revealed that he has a significant similarity to his character. Bravo knows his way around a kitchen, and he’s done some of the cooking that Gabriel does onscreen.
“I was a sous chef in a restaurant a few years ago,” the actor noted. “So when I first got the scripts, I was like, ‘Oh, wow, this is definitely for me, I’m definitely going to use these skills.’ And so they made me cook the omelets that I had made for Emily on the show.
Finally, responding to the criticism the series receives for its portrayal of French culture, Bravo suggested that it was fairly accurate. He noted that the show’s creator, Darren Star, lived in France for years and knew his language and his daily life.
“It’s true, you know,” Bravo explained. “Darren experienced it because he lived in Paris and speaks French. And so it’s not just a guess from the American point of view. It’s from someone who really experienced it. So I really like the fact that he found all these little dots that [sometimes even we] do not see because we are inside.
Emily in Paris premieres on Netflix on October 2.
