Prior to the performance, Norton interviewed Cyrus virtually, asking the singer how she put something together for the episode.
“I wanted to create something special for you and your show, because I always love being there,” she said.
“I created a set that is only a Million Mileys, which is a nightmare, and I don’t think anyone would want that, but again, we’re in this difficult creative time because we’ve been able to to dream and exercise our imaginations in a certain way because reality is so wrong right now.
Cyrus has performed the single several times since its release in August.
In September she took to the BBC Live Lounge for a performance of the song, as well as a cover of ‘My Future’ by Billie Eilish, followed by an appearance on Tonight’s Show with Jimmy Fallon A little after.
She also performed the single for the virtual festival iHeartRadio, featuring her collaboration song with Mark Ronson “Nothing Breaks Like A Heart” and a rock-fueled cover of “Heart Of Glass” by Blondie.
“Midnight Sky” is the first taste of Cyrus’ new musical direction, with an album of new works on the way. In an interview with a French radio station NRJ last month, she revealed that the upcoming record will “reflect who I am.”
