Van Dijk posted the following message on social media on Sunday evening:
This afternoon, I met with a leading consultant to begin the process of planning the finer details of my rehabilitation following yesterday’s incident.
I am now fully focused on my recovery and will do my best to get back as quickly as possible.
Despite the obvious disappointment, I firmly believe that the difficulty lies in the timeliness and with the help of God, I will make sure to come back better, fitter and stronger than ever.
In football, as in life, I think everything happens for a reason and it’s important to try to keep your head up high, whether it’s in the highs or the lows. With the support of my wife, kids, family and everyone in Liverpool, I am up to the challenge.
I want to thank everyone for the messages of support, it meant so much to me and my family, and I will now do my best to support my teammates in any way I can for a few weeks to come. I take my own recovery day in and day out. I’ll be back.
