NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – It’s a harsh reality. The coronavirus pandemic is wreaking havoc on local economies.New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli released a new report on Thursday that shows how many restaurants and bars in the city may never recover.

On Victory Boulevard in the Castleton Corners section of Staten Island, businesses are fighting and shutting down and the recently released findings of a government audit indicate the situation will worsen by April, CBS2’s Dave Carlin reported.

From holidays and layoffs to businesses closed forever, government COVID-19 restrictions are choking New York’s economy, especially its bars and restaurants.

An audit by the state comptroller explains what was feared – that the financial outlook for many is bleak. He finds that up to 50% of Big Apple’s bars and restaurants could close permanently over the next six months.

“Today they are facing an unprecedented upheaval that could lead to the closure of many people forever,” said DiNapoli.

Aki Iliopoulos, owner of Staten Island Diner, said he works seven days a week. He said he was now able to bring clients inside, but not enough.

He is far from the only business owner to occupy this precarious position.

“Twenty-five percent was a good start. It will not support the business. It will not support the industry, ”said Queens Chamber of Commerce chairman Tom Grech.

“It’s in my blood to fight, to fight until you have nothing else to fight,” Iliopoulos added.

Chief Rob Libertella said it is a vital industry, which contributed $ 27 billion in taxable sales last year.

“We will bounce back. Unfortunately, some things won’t, ”Libertella said.

Pushing it to the edge hurts everyone.

“I’m a foodservice chef and do events like Super Bowl XLVIII, a few World Series, but without having fans in the stands, our income is down about 85%. It’s going to have a ripple effect throughout the economy, ”Libertella said.

Business owners are asking for more federal funding – grants and loans – and even more city and state funding for easing restrictions.

“As government leaders, we owe it to them to use this report and make sure that we pass laws, that we push the mayor and every elected official to do their job,” said Catalina Cruz, member of the assembly. .

Many owners have said opening restaurant seats indoors at 50% capacity, which Gov. Andrew Cuomo has suggested could happen in about a month, would help, but even that might not help. suffice.
