The United States has set a world record for coronavirus cases in 24 hours, according to a tally, with just over 100,000 new infections recorded. The daily workload of 100,233 – according to Reuters – exceeded 97,894 cases reported by India in a single day in September.
The news comes three days before the presidential election, and as Donald Trump continues to stage large-scale events in which Covid mitigation measures such as masks and social distancing are not enforced . The president himself, the first lady, key aides and Republican leaders have contracted the virus after attending such events.
Trump, who has spent time in the hospital, insisted the United States is “turning the corner” in the fight to contain the pandemic. This week his eldest son Donald Trump Jr, a key campaign surrogate, said deaths from Covid-19 were “next to nothing.”
According to Johns Hopkins University – which on Friday counted nearly 99,000 cases in the United States – nearly 230,000 cases of Covid-19 out of more than 9 million in the United States have resulted in death.
The president and his campaign have sought to contrast Democratic challenger Joe Biden’s promise to implement another lockdown if necessary.
Samedi, Biden said in a press release: “President Trump still does not have a plan to tackle Covid-19. He abandoned you, your family, America. He just wants us to be numb to the horrors of the death toll and the pain. We cannot afford another four years of his failed leadership.
Stanford University scientists on Friday released a study that found 18 recent Trump rallies produced more than 30,000 confirmed cases of Covid-19 and “likely resulted in more than 700 deaths.”
The authors set out to “study the effects of large group meetings on the spread of Covid-19 by studying the impact of 18 Trump campaign rallies” on “up to 10 weeks after the rally for each event.”
“Our estimate of the average treatment effect on the 18 events,” they wrote, “implies that they increased subsequent confirmed cases of Covid-19 by more than 250 per 100,000 residents.
“By extrapolating this figure to the entire sample, we conclude that these 18 gatherings ultimately resulted in over 30,000 additional confirmed cases of Covid-19. Applying county-specific post-event death rates, we conclude that the gatherings likely led to over 700 deaths (not necessarily among participants) ”.
The United States broke its previous one-day high of 77,299 cases recorded in July, five times in the past 10 days. The number of daily infections reported in the past two days suggests the country is reporting more than one new case per second.
Despite the overall figure, the United States has a rate of around 28,100 cases per million people, which places it 14th in the world for prevalence.
