UFC Fight Island 5 produced a wild night of fighting last night (Saturday, October 10, 2020) inside the Flash Forum on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. In the main event of the evening, Cory Sandhagen knocked out Marlon Moraes with a wheel-kick knockout victory (see again here). In the act of co-headlining, Edson Barboza finally broke his three-game losing streak by outscoring Makwan Amirkhani for 15 minutes. And let’s not forget the unforgettable KO of Joaquin Buckley’s Candidate of the Decade (see him again here).
Biggest winner: Cory Sandhagen
Cory Sandhagen is perhaps the most modest dangerous fighter you will ever meet. He’s not built like Yoel Romero, he doesn’t talk about trash like Conor McGregor, but man can fight. And he brought everyone up to speed – including division champion Petr Yan – after he stunned the fighting world by taking out the 135-pound # 1 ranked fighter with soil and pound that all started with a spectacular spinning wheel. With the win, Sandhagen goes 6-1 inside the Octagon with his only loss to Aljamain Sterling, the man who will face Yan next. This will undoubtedly mark the “The Sandman’s” ticket for the big dance against the winner of Sterling vs. Yan.
Finalist: Joaquin Buckley
Buckley produced arguably the best knockout of 2020 – if not ever – after scoring Impa Kasanganay with a jumping kick in ages, a first inside the Octagon. Buckley has set the MMA world on fire on social media, with everyone from Justin Gaethje, Dana White and even Nate Diaz hopping on Twitter to give their stamp of approval. If that wasn’t enough, Buckley won a $ 50,000 bonus after the fight, and he might even get a locker room bonus, as well. With a baby on the way, that extra bread will be welcome, as will the praise that is sure to come to her in the months to come.
Biggest loser: Marlon Moraes
Marlon’s hopes for another UFC bantamweight title shot took a big hit after being upset by headlining Cory Sandhagen. As a favorite, Moraes had extra confidence – which he never lacks. But what he wasn’t prepared for was the spinning wheel kick “The Sandman” unleashed out of nowhere. It’s now two losses for “Magic” in his last three outings, which will probably cost him his first place. It’s back to the drawing board for the Brazilian Bomber, and it will have a long journey to the top as it fights in a very crowded 135-pound division.
