TV Rating: “The Undoing” Premieres “Lovecraft Country”

Fresh out of the stunning “Lovecraft Country” finale, HBO’s last occupant of the Sunday night time slot did just as well in the odds.Sunday saw the premiere of Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant’s thriller “The Undoing,” which managed to match the curtain-raiser “Lovecraft Country” with 1.4 million total viewers across all platforms. That number puts him in the middle of the pack when it comes to HBO premieres in recent months. At the top of the recent new stack of shows is “Perry Mason” with 1.7 million viewers from all platforms, followed by “Watchmen” with 1.5 million viewers, then “The Undoing” and “Lovecraft” with 1.4 million, then “The Outsider” with 1.2 million.

HBO is hoping that delayed viewing of “The Undoing” grows in a way just as dizzying as “Lovecraft,” which has garnered over 10 million viewers to date for its debut. Linear numbers for “Cancel” should be available on Tuesday.

“The Undoing” is a six-part limited series starring Kidman and Grant as Grace and Jonathan Fraser, living the only life they ever wanted for themselves. Overnight, a chasm opens in their existence: a violent death and a chain of terrible revelations. Left behind in the wake of a growing disaster and very public and horrified at how she ignored her own advice, Grace must dismantle a life and create another for her child and family. Noah Jupe plays the duo’s son, while Donald Sutherland plays Grace’s wealthy father.

He sees Kidman and David E. Kelley retool after “Big Little Lies,” and acclaimed director Susanne Bier.

Kidman and Grant spoke to Variety working together for the first time, and explained how Bier was instrumental in integrating Grant.
