The federal judge faced tough questions from Democratic senators and declined to reveal whether she would support overturning key decisions on the Affordable Care Act and Roe v Wade, which, respectively, provide protections for insurance for millions of people and ensures access to reproductive health care options for women across the country.
Barrett does not remember Trump’s remarks on health care
Amy Coney Barrett says she does not recall seeing statements by President Donald Trump that he planned to appoint Supreme Court justices who would repeal the Affordable Care Act before his nomination for an open seat.
His comments came in response to questions from Sen. Kamala Harris of California, Democratic running mate. Harris interviewed Barrett via a video stream from his Capitol Hill office rather than attending in person due to coronavirus concerns.
When asked if she was aware of Trump’s comments prior to her appointment, Barrett said she couldn’t answer yes or no.
“I don’t remember hearing or seeing such statements,” she said.
She later said Democratic senators may have referred to Trump’s comments in conversations after his appointment but before his confirmation hearings.
Harris also noted that Barrett wrote an article criticizing the court’s decision to uphold the Affordable Care Act five months before Trump appointed her to an appeals court in May 2017. – AP
