When Tadej Pogacar won the Tour de France 2020, it was a success story for the entire UAE squad, including veteran manager Allan Peiper. But this was by no means the first success from behind for Peiper, who has twice battled cancer.

Peiper made his debut in the sport decades ago as an athlete before becoming athletic director and athletic director on elite teams. After his parents separated due to job loss and alcoholism as a teenager, Peiper dropped out of school and ended up in Belgium to run at age 17.
