Thousands of people without power as high winds blow in New Brunswick

Thousands of NB Power customers lost power on Wednesday after strong winds hit the province. The outages, which peaked at over 22,000 in the afternoon, are scattered across New Brunswick, but most of it is in the western and southern regions. By 8 p.m., there were over 14,200 failures in total.

About 3,600 customers in Victoria and Madawaska counties lost power and 3,000 more in southern Carleton County. In the Kennebecasis Valley region, over 2,600 are without power.

There are also widespread blackouts, approximately 1,900, in and around Fredericton and more than 1,200 throughout Restigouche County in northern New Brunswick.

NB Power spokesman Marc Belliveau said the strong gusts were the cause of the outages.

“This time of year, when there are still quite a few leaves on the trees, the gusts of wind make them act like sails, and they will hit our wires and cause blackouts,” Belliveau said in an email to CBC News.

“Our teams are absent and will resolve outages as quickly and safely as possible. ”

He directed customers to the utility’s website for estimated repair times, saying “they will vary depending on the complexity of the repairs.”
