Last week, movie channel Cineworld has announced the temporary closure of all its UK sites and Odeon has moved to a weekend-only opening at a quarter of its locations.

This weekend, Vue announced that nearly a quarter of its theaters would be closed three days a week in order to keep costs down.

But The Witches won’t be the movie to bring people back to the theater seats.

The remake will air on premium video on demand in the UK from October 26, in time for Halloween, and will be available for a 48-hour rental from participating digital retailers.

Based on Dahl’s 1983 novel, The Witches follows the story of a young orphan who goes to live with his grandmother – an excellent storyteller who teaches her grandson the importance of being able to spot a witch.

During a journey, they meet the great witch, who has gathered witches from all over the world to hear her vile plans.

While the 1990 film was set in the UK, the remake is set in the US, with Grandma living in the rural town of Demopolis, Alabama.

It’s the latest movie to jump theaters and head straight to streaming, with Pixar announcing last week that its new Soul movie will premiere on Disney +.
