The Canucks hit Troy Stecher and Tyson Barrie. What happens next? – The Athletic


We’ve reached day two of free agency and there are more questions than answers for the Vancouver Canucks. Of course, in a vacuum you can understand some of their decisions. Letting Jacob Markstrom and Chris Tanev leave for the Calgary Flames was the prudent decision in the long run, given the lavish term each received. But the Canucks haven’t been able to find any viable alternatives and are currently sitting down with a list with a number of glaring holes.

Vancouver needs a right-handed top-four defenseman to replace Tanev. They need a top six winger to replace Tyler Toffoli. They could use another bona fide NHL-caliber right-handed defenseman for the third pair. The salary cap significantly inhibits these efforts – they only have $ 7.3 million in flexibility with four spots on the list to fill.
