As in the Derby, won by Authentic last month, and the Belmont Stakes, which kicked off the series in June, no spectators were allowed inside the Pimlico Race Course on Saturday.
Each Triple Crown leg has taken on a different character. The Belmont, which launched the series for the first time in history, marked the return of a major sporting event in New York City.
The Kentucky Derby took place against a backdrop of tense protests. Before the start of the race in Louisville, hundreds of people calling for racial justice surrounded Churchill Downs, and several members of an armed black militia knelt in front of Louisville police officers stationed inside an erected fence around the track. It was the 101st day of protests in the city following the death of Breonna Taylor, a black emergency technician who was gunned down at her home by police during a botched raid of her apartment.
The Preakness has earned a reputation for its easy going atmosphere. But with its sprawling infield devoid of its usual noisy crowds of beer drinkers and popular music acts performing on a stage, this Triple Crown season has come to a leisurely conclusion.
