Every week, MobileSyrup reviews some of the most notable movies and TV shows that have recently hit Canadian streaming platforms.Our “Streaming in Canada” column generally focuses on new content from Amazon Prime Video Canada, Crave, and Netflix Canada, but other services like Apple TV + and Disney + will be mentioned where applicable.

We will also feature shows or movies made in Canada, involving notable Canadian actors or crew and / or shot in Canada.

Finally, with the COVID-19 pandemic causing many movies to hit digital platforms much earlier than expected, we’ll be taking note of any major movies that fall into this category, if any.


Amazon Prime Video

Mr. Robot (Season 4)

In the fourth and final season of M. Robot, Elliot is working with CEO Phillip Price to right his past wrongs.

M. Robot was created by Sam Esmail (Back home) and stars Rami Malek (Rhapsodie bohémienne), Christian Slater (Breaking in), Portia Doubleday (Carrie), Carly Chaikin (Suburgatory) and BD Wong (jurassic park franchise).

Charme City Kings

From executive producers Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, comes a drama about a 14-year-old who is torn between walking straight and becoming increasingly involved in an infamous motorcycle gang.

Charme City Kings was directed by Angel Manuel Soto (Inside Trump’s America) and stars Jahi Di’Allo Winston (The bright side), rapper Meek Mill (“Going Bad”) and Teyonah Parris (Mad Men).

Charm city of kings is one of several original products of the US-only streaming service HBO Max which is available exclusively on Crave in Canada as part of the agreement between Bell and Time Warner Media.

This documentary follows Luis A Miranda, Jr. as he works to alleviate the devastation of Hurricane Maria in his homeland, as well as manage the logistics to bring his son Lin-Manuel Miranda. Hamilton play on the island.

Always, Luis is John James’ first film.

Disney +

Good things [Disney+ Original]

Based on the book of the same name by Tom Wolfe in 1979 (and the film of the same name in 1983), Good things tells the story of the Mercury Seven, a group of astronauts who competed to be the first men in space at the height of the Cold War.

The right Things was developed by Mark Lafferty (stone castle) and features an ensemble cast that includes Toronto’s own Patrick J. Adams (Costume), Jake McDorman (Shameless), James Lafferty (One Tree Hill) and Aaron Stanton (Mad Men).

It is worth noting that Good things was once set to premiere on National Geographic but has moved to Disney + amid the COVID-19 pandemic. This is Nat Geo’s first scripted series for Disney +.

A group of deaf and hard of hearing students share their experiences at Gallaudet University in Washington.

The forty year version [Netflix Original]

As her 40th birthday approaches, a struggling playwright tries to reinvent herself as a rapper.

The forty year version was written, directed and co-produced by Radha Blank (Empire) and stars Blank, Peter Kim (After Forever) and Oswin Benjamin (leading role). The film is loosely based on Blank’s own life.

The Haunting of Bly Manor [Netflix Original]

In this autonomous follow-up of 2018 The Haunting of Hill House, a young housekeeper is hired to look after a man’s niece and nephew, to start seeing apparitions that haunt the family’s country house.

Based on the 1898 horror novel by Henry James The turn of the screw, the haunting of Bly Manor unites Hill House creator Mike Flanagan with some of the cast members of the first series including Victoria Pedretti, Oliver Jackson-Cohen and Henry Thomas, as well as newcomer Rahul Kohli (Zombie).

It is worth noting that The Haunting of Bly Manor was filmed in Vancouver.

On Halloween, a kindhearted but much ridiculed deli owner sets out to save his town from monsters.

Hubie Halloween was directed by Steven Brill (Petite Nicky) and features an ensemble cast that includes co-writer Adam Sandler (Merry Gilmore), Kevin James (King of queens), Julie Bowen (Modern family), Ray Liotta (Goodfellas) and Rob Schneider (Saturday Night Live).

Schitt’s Creek (Season 6)

Find out what happens to the Rose family in the sixth and final season of Ruisseau Schitt – or see it again if you’ve seen it before.

The successful Canadian series, which recently won a record number of Emmys, was created by Eugene Levy of Hamilton, Ontario (American pie franchise) and son Dan Levy (MTV) and stars the two men Levy (along with Dan’s sister and fellow Toronto Sarah), Toronto’s Catherine O’Hara (Alone at home) et Annie Murphy d’Ottawa (Trays).
