The Tennessee Titans and Pittsburgh Steelers will not play Week 4 as originally planned and the game will be rescheduled later this season.

The NFL released a statement on Thursday announcing the postponement:

The Pittsburgh-Tennessee game scheduled for Week 4 will be postponed until later this season after an additional Titans player and staff member tested positive for COVID-19 today. An announcement of the new play date will be made shortly.

The decision to postpone the match was taken to ensure the health and safety of players, coaches and staff on match day. The Titans facility will remain closed and the team will continue to have no in-person activity until further notice.

Tom Pelissero de NFL Media notes that five players and six staff have tested positive for COVID-19 in total. ESPN’s Adam Schefter clarifies that two of these positive tests were discovered this morning. A Titans coach also tested positive late last week.

The Titans and Vikings played Minnesota on Sunday. Upon news of positive COVID-19 tests with Tennessee, both teams suspended all in-person activities at the club as of Tuesday. On Wednesday morning, the NFL announced that the Week 4 game would be postponed and reports emerged that the league was hoping it would be rescheduled for Monday or Tuesday; further positive COVID-19 tests made this impossible. The Vikings haven’t had any positive cases at this time, which is positive considering the closeness the players shared on the pitch.

The NFL and the NFL Player’s Association released a statement earlier this week acknowledging their decision to suspend football activities in two cities:

“On Tuesday morning, the Titans’ COVID test results returned three new positives for players and five new positives for staff. The Titans will be suspending the club’s in-person activities starting today. Likewise, the Vikings, who played against the Titans on Sunday, individual club activities. Both clubs are working closely with the NFL and NFLPA, including our infectious disease experts, to assess close contacts, perform additional testing and monitor developments. All decisions will be made with health and safety in mind. continue to share updates as more information becomes available.

Pittsburgh had improved to 3-0 in the young NFL season with a comeback victory over the Texans on Sunday. They are scheduled to play on Sunday, October 11 against Philadelphia. Tennessee is also 3-0 after narrowly beating Minnesota. They are due to play in Buffalo on Sunday October 11, but even that has to be questioned. The quarantine period is often referred to as a two week period. If the Titans don’t get the situation back in order quickly, it could affect future competition.
