The COVID-19 pandemic has plunged the world into lockdown and the entertainment industry into a free fall. The movie experience is in limbo, streaming services are grabbing whatever is still on the shelves to wrap it up as fresh content, and everything from movies and TV to games has been shaken up. due to production difficulties with remote pipelines. But in the chaos of the moment, a few advantageous storytellers saw an opportunity to tell stories in new ways, from zoom-shot specials to full-fledged TV dramas shot in quarantine. And then there are people who are trying to tell the story of the moment urgently, and in the only way they can.
Enter: Michael Bay.
Billed as the first feature film shot in Los Angeles during the epidemic, Songbird is a horror thriller imagining the future of the coronavirus crisis. Produced by the Transformers director and directed by Adam Mason (Hulu’s In the dark), the movie finds the world stricken with – brace yourself – COVID-23 virus, which has mutated and forced the population into a fourth year of lockdown. But in this harsh reality, which certainly won’t feel extrapolated from current political conditions or cause anxiety to anyone watching, infected Americans are being taken from their homes by the government and placed in quarantine camps. Fortunately, LG technology still exists, which makes the world a better place.
Here’s the full synopsis:
In the midst of this dystopian landscape, a fearless courier, Nico (KJ Apa), who is immune to the deadly pathogen, finds hope and love with Sara (Sofia Carson), though her lockdown prohibits them from making physical contact. When Sara is thought to have been infected, Nico runs desperately through the barren streets of Los Angeles in search of the only thing that can save her from imprisonment… or worse.
Songbird also stars Bradley Whitford and Demi Moore as a wealthy couple who may hold the key to Nico’s mission; Alexandra Daddario as a singer entangled in a messy and forbidden affair; Paul Walter Hauser as a disabled veteran whose best friend – a drone named Max – is his eyes and ears in a world that left him behind; Craig Robinson as Nico’s boss; and Peter Stormare as the corrupt head of the city’s sanitation department, which seizes infected people and transports them to the Q zone.
Just a moment of fun at the cinema! The first trailer for Songbird circumvents the restrictions necessary for a coronavirus production by isolating most of the characters and diving into a world where everyone communicates via video calls. Maybe this is something you would like to watch.
Songbird does not yet have a release date.
