The explosion in the northwestern town kills at least seven people and injures 70 others, most of them children.

Islamabad, Pakistan – An explosion at a religious school in the Pakistani city of Peshawar, in northwestern Pakistan, killed at least seven people and injured 70 others, many of them children, police officials said.The explosion occurred at the Speen Jamaat Mosque, which also serves as a religious school for local children, at 8:30 a.m. local time (3:30 GMT) on Tuesday, a police official told Al Jazeera.

“It was not a suicide bombing, there were explosives which had been kept in a bag there,” he said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

Television footage of the explosion scene showed extensive damage inside the mosque’s main prayer hall, with stains on the ceiling and debris strewn on the floor.

Provincial Health Minister Taimur Khan Jhagra said the injured were being treated at Lady Reading Hospital, the city’s main government hospital.

“There were 72 [wounded] patients brought to LRH, and there have been seven unfortunate deaths, ”Jhagra told reporters at the hospital.

“Our only goal right now is that injured patients receive the best possible care and have the best chance of recovery.”
