An inmate at the Algoma Treatment and Remand Center has tested positive for COVID-19, SooToday has confirmed.OPSEU Local 678 president Josh Miller said test results were received early Sunday morning as part of an ongoing screening program for newly admitted offenders.

“There are procedures in place to monitor and test newly admitted offenders, and we are restricting the movement of these offenders for a 14-day admission period for this very reason,” Miller said in an email to SooToday on Sunday. .

Contact tracing will be carried out with the assistance of Algoma Public Health.

Miller says the local joint occupational health and safety committee is investigating and taking action to ensure the health and safety of union members at the prison.
