Rio Ferdinand hailed Marcus Rashford’s sublime hat-trick after Manchester United’s 5-0 win over Leipzig and said the striker portrayed the opposition as ‘schoolchildren’ with Dayot Upamecano having a ‘nightmare’ at Old Trafford.

Rashford made waves both on and off the pitch and was United’s hero in their stunning win over PSG last week, but he missed out on a place in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s starting XI for the second clash of the season in the Champions League.

Mason Greenwood’s strike in the first half was all that separated the two teams before a flurry of late goals put the hosts out of sight as Rashford struggled against a tiring Leipzig, unbeaten in all competitions before the match.

The England striker even missed an earlier opportunity to win the match ball by allowing Anthony Martial to open his account for the season from the penalty spot in the 87th minute.

Much of the discussion leading up to the Group H meeting surrounded Leipzig center-back Upamecano, who has been closely linked with the move to the Theater of Dreams for some time.

Reports this week suggested United were already making an offer to sign Upamecano next summer, but Ferdinand was far from impressed with what he saw from the Frenchman on Wednesday night.

Discussing Rashford’s phenomenal performance in the BT Sport studio, Ferdinand said, “It’s on fire.

“The only way I can explain tonight’s little cameo was that it was almost like being in the playground at school and the big boy, sixth, comes and plays with the first years and bully everything. the world.

“Too fast, too strong and take their money for dinner.” He did the lot tonight, he was head and shoulders above them.

“He made defenders that we marveled at before the game, who we saw last season playing really well in the Champions League, he made them look like school kids tonight. “

The former USA and England defender added: “It’s about being ruthless, but I thought Upamecano had a nightmare today.

“It’s cruelty. There was no doubt in your mind, once he got through it, the confidence he’s showing right now and just his intention to hit the back of the net and be in the goal.

‘Game over. There is a venom when he hits it like that.

Paul Scholes compared Rashford’s clinical finish to that of Ruud van Nistelrooy by singing the striker’s praises in his post-match analysis.

“It was Van Nistelrooy, wasn’t it?” he said.

“You see him go by and you know he’s breaking it in the lower corner.

“It was awesome.
