All Britons residing in France before the end of 2020 will need to apply for one of the new cards in order to be able to stay legally in France, with applications required by 20 June 2021 at the latest.

The cards must apply to retain many of the same rights the British have enjoyed as European citizens, under the terms of the Withdrawal Agreement Treaty signed between the UK and the EU earlier this year.

It is expected that there will be two types, cards conferring full and permanent rights for those who can show their residence in France for more than five years, and temporary cards for those who have lived in France for less than five years. long as that.

This latter group will be able to apply for full cards after spending five years in France.
