Rajon Rondo withdraws from Lakers contract

The Lakers re-signing Rajon Rondo – if just a minimum wage contract – the last offseason has drawn skepticism. He was so terrible fit with LeBron James. And the Lakers gave Rondo a two-year contract – with a player option!

But Rondo, 12 years after winning with the Celtics, has proven he can still help a Championship team. He improved his chemistry on the court with LeBron. And Rondo particularly stepped up in Game 6 of the NBA Finals.

Now it’s time to get paid.

Chris Sheridan de BasketballNews.com:

Rajon Rondo will be relinquishing his contract with the Los Angeles Lakers to become an unrestricted free agent, BasketballNews.com learned Thursday.

Rondo’s player option is worth $ 2,692,991 next season. Although this is the minimum, he is taking a slight risk in withdrawing.

He had to earn the minimum for the second year of a contract – 5% more than the minimum of the first year. From now on, his minimum for next season will be the minimum for the first year.

It was $ 2,564,753 this season. If the salary cap remains the same, it will likely remain the minimum salary for the first year with a player of Rondo’s experience level (more than 10 seasons).

The salary cap could also drop due to the coronavirus and the economic fallout. Presumably, minimum wages would also decrease by a proportional amount.

Of course, Rondo is not necessarily online for another minimum contract. Sometimes players are classified as minimum guys. But the Lakers paid Rondo $ 9 million just two seasons ago.

Here’s guessing that the Lakers, who own his early bird rights and have little salary cap flexibility otherwise, are rewarding Rondo with an increase in his player option salary. But it is far from guaranteed. By unsubscribing, Rondo opens up many possibilities.
