Protests in France pay tribute to beheaded teacher


PARIS (AP) – Protesters in France took part in rallies in support of freedom of expression and in tribute to a history professor beheaded near Paris on Sunday after discussing the caricatures of the prophet of Islam Muhammad with his Samuel Paty was beheaded on Friday by an 18-year-old Moscow-born Chechen refugee who was shot dead by police. Political leaders, associations and unions demonstrated on Sunday in the Place de la République in Paris, holding signs reading “Je suis Samuel”, which echoed the “Je suis Charlie” rallying cry after the 2015 attacks on the Charlie Hebdo satirical newspaper. Demonstrations also brought together large cities such as Lyon, Toulouse, Strasbourg, Nantes, Marseille, Lille and Bordeaux.
