Philip was made Prince of the United Kingdom and has since been known as His Royal Highness Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.A statement at the time said, according to Town & Country: “The Queen has been pleased by letters patent under the Great Seal of the Kingdom, dated February 22, 1957, to give and grant to His Royal Highness The Duke of ‘Edinburgh, KG, KT, GBE, style and titular dignity of a prince of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Whitehall.

“The Queen has been pleased to declare her will and pleasure that His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh will henceforth be known as His Royal Highness Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

A few years later, the Queen also changed the surname used by the royal family, so that it included Philip’s surname.
