If you’ve ever thought about buying a dedicated e-reader, Amazon will once again get big discounts on some of its Kindle e-readers as part of Prime Day 2020, which begins Tuesday, October 13. At $ 80, the Kindle Paperwhite will get a $ 50 discount, which is $ 5 less than the previous all-time product. We think this will be a particularly popular Prime Day deal.
Prime Day is also a good time to consider the entry-level Kindle’s children’s edition; you can save $ 35 off the list price of $ 110 and also get a free case and one year of Kid Plus subscription service from Amazon, worth $ 36.
In addition, Amazon will offer a $ 5 “any Kindle book” credit with the purchase of certain Kindle devices.
Like most other Prime Day sales, these are scheduled to start Tuesday, October 13 at 12:01 a.m. PT and run for up to 48 hours. If you don’t see the deal you were hoping for, don’t give up hope – experience has shown us that there are likely more Kindle Prime Day deals to come.
It’s unclear whether the high-end Kindle Oasis or the Basic Kindle (non-Kids Edition) will also be on sale, but we’ll be keeping an eye on their prices as Amazon often slips previously unannounced deals (in addition to a deal. flash or two.) on their devices in Prime Day. These are the Goldilocks from the Amazon line and our current pick of CNET editors in the category. Here are a few things we love about the Kindle Paperwhite:
- It is 10% thinner and lighter than the previous version.
- It has a ‘flush’ design with a back made of a softer, grippy material instead of hard plastic.
- It’s a fully waterproof Kindle, like the top-of-the-line Kindle Oasis, and has a plastic screen that Amazon says is shock and scratch resistant.
- It has built-in Bluetooth, so you can download Amazon Audible audiobooks and listen to them with wireless headphones.
Note that Amazon may update the Kindle Paperwhite in 2020 (it was released in November 2018). If and when this happens, it’s unclear how much of an upgrade it will be. For example, USB-C charging could be added and maybe the lighting scheme could be updated, but we don’t expect any dramatic improvements. Read our Amazon Kindle Paperwhite (2018) review.

The latest iteration of Amazon’s entry-level ebook reader, which Amazon simply calls the Kindle, now features a self-illuminating display and an improved design. At $ 90, this e-book reader costs $ 10 more than the previous model, the 2016 Kindle, but this Kindle device regularly goes on sale for as little as $ 60. We prefer the Amazon Kindle Paperwhite, which has a high-resolution display (text and images look a bit sharper), is waterproof, and has a slightly better lighting system. But if you don’t want to spend a lot on an e-reader, the standard Kindle is a good option, especially when it’s budgeted.
The kids’ edition for sale here includes a case – there are 4 case options to choose from – as well as a year of Amazon Kids Plus (FreeTime Unlimited), which normally costs $ 3 per month and gives you access to hundreds of children’s books. Amazon Kids Plus includes the Complete Harry Potter Series and the first book of other popular series such as Artemis Fowl.
