However, a few clubs were still able to spend big to prepare their squad for the remainder of the 2020/21 season.
That being said, here we take a look at the latest transfer rumors involving clubs across the Premier League.
United travel to Upamecano
Manchester United are set to pass as RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano in 2021, according to the Times.
United considered making a move for the much-loved French center-back during the summer transfer window, but the 22-year-old ended up signing a new three-year deal with the German side.
Upamecano’s new contract includes a clause – where he will be allowed to leave for £ 38million – which Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side plan to trigger when they come on the line next summer.
As it stands, United have Eric Bailly, Harry Maguire, Marcos Rojo, Victor Lindelof, Axel Tuanzebe and Phil Jones as center-back.
Mahrez open to return from France
Manchester City winger Riyad Mahrez is set to return to France and join his childhood club Marseille.
Mahrez arrived late in City’s 3-0 win over the Ligue 1 side in Tuesday night’s Champions League clash.
The Algerian trickster told Canal Plus (via the Daily Mail): “I could have gone to play in Marseille (in 2014-15) and I can still play in Marseille. You never know in life, you shouldn’t close any door.
“I didn’t know at the time and I was fine at Leicester but they decided I didn’t have the level required (to play there). “
Mustafi proposes an update of the contract
Shkodran Mustafi has revealed that he has yet to have talks with Arsenal about a new contract with the club.
Reports had claimed that Mustafi rejected a new deal at Emirates Stadium and informed the club that he would leave at the end of the season.
However, the 28-year-old played down these claims: “Well at the moment I was just happy to come back from an injury, it’s been three long months – I was happy to come back and be able to play again. .
“We haven’t talked about anything, so I can’t tell you guys. “

Latest Alaba contract
David Alaba’s contract negotiations not close to finalization, says Journaliste photo Christian Falk.
Alaba has been linked with a move to both Liverpool and Chelsea – who will no doubt be put on alert by the latest developments.
The Austrian defender – who can play both center-back and left-back – is without a contract next summer.
This means the Reds and Blues could sign him a pre-contract in January and he would arrive in England this summer once his contract with the European champions expires.
