Philadelphia 76ers eye Daryl Morey to lead operations


Former Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey is in the process of finalizing a deal to become the new president of basketball operations for the Philadelphia 76ers, sources told ESPN.An official announcement is expected as early as this week, sources said.

General manager Elton Brand is expected to stay in his current post, and new coach Doc Rivers is a supporter of hiring, sources said. Rivers and Morey have a long history and a strong relationship.

Morey has long been the target of 76ers ownership, turning down a chance to lead the team two years ago before signing an extension with the Rockets.

Following Houston’s elimination from the league restart in Orlando, Morey approached owner Tilman Fertitta with the idea of ‚Äč‚Äčleaving the job and the teams quietly worked on an exit deal to wrap up his 13 seasons at the head of the franchise’s basketball operations.

Discussions with the Sixers began soon after, sources said, and intensified this week, with Morey heading to Philadelphia to meet with the owners, sources said.
