The midfielder has less than a year left on his current contract and United have yet to trigger the extension clause on his contract for another 12 months. Pogba has confirmed that negotiations on a new deal at Old Trafford have not started despite his agent Mino Raiola saying in August he expected talks with United’s board.
Pogba admitted he is still thinking about his future and a potential transfer to Real Madrid.
“I am in Manchester. We know that we’ve talked about it a lot and I haven’t [spoken about it]”He said.” I heard a lot of noise that I was going to leave and that I was going to leave in the clubs on the left and on the right.
“Today I’m still at Manchester United and fighting to try to take the club even higher. We have all heard these things that have been said. What to answer? Yes, all footballers would love to play for Real Madrid. Maybe it’s a dream. It’s a dream for me, why not someday? Like I said, I’m at Manchester United and I love my club. ”
Few fans will say that Pogba has lived up to expectations since joining the club from Juventus for a world record amount and that the time to sever ties with the 27-year-old for good could be nigh.
Luckily for United, Pogba has already spoken lyrically about the player who could replace him at Old Trafford: Eduardo Camavinga.
The 17-year-old scored on his maiden start for the senior France national team, scoring a superb kick in the 7-1 demolition of Ukraine. Pogba praised his young teammate and compared the Rennes midfielder to himself.
Pogba said: “It’s a pleasure to see him put on the jersey. To score after his first starts is really wonderful. I was really happy for him. I wish him only the best and much more. He has it all. His future is in his hands.
“He’s very comfortable, he’s a little dancer. It reminds me a little of myself. He is not a shy person. This is good because he is confident. He has confidence in his qualities. He is a very good youngster, I love him very much. ”
The statistics confirm the parallels Pogba alluded to.
Both players tend to take on the role of deep playmaker, usually in a two-man midfield pivot. Pogba tends to have more influence in the bottom third while Camavinga offers more protection in the bottom four. In the last calendar year, he averaged 10.1 defensive duels every 90 minutes against Pogba’s 6.61. The youngster has also averaged more tackles and interceptions than the current United.
Camavinga displays maturity beyond his years and is extremely composed on the ball, making him ideal for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s current system. The 17-year-old has completed 90.74% of his passes for Rennes in the past calendar year and has demonstrated his ability to dictate play in the same way Pogba does when in top form.
Rennes will be powerless to keep their star midfielder as their rapid development continues and the competition is likely to be fierce for his signing. However, losing Pogba to win Camavinga could be a blessing in disguise for United.
