Parisian doctor says France has ‘lost control’ over COVID-19 pandemic

A Parisian doctor said the country had lost control over COVID-19 and called for a return to lockdown.

The remarks come a day after France reported more than 52,000 cases of COVID-19.

Dr Eric Caumes, head of the infectious diseases department of a Paris hospital, made the comments on a French radio.

The number of people hospitalized for COVID-19 has risen sharply in recent weeks.

Patients with COVID-19 now occupy more than half of intensive care units in France.

France is one of the countries hardest hit by the pandemic, with more than 34,700 deaths linked to the virus.

It currently registers more than 340 positive cases per 100,000 people nationwide every week.

More severe restrictions were put in place by the French government last week, including a nighttime curfew covering 46 million people.
