President Macron hailed the teacher beheaded by an Islamist as the embodiment of freedom and reason and the face of the French republic in a moving tribute to Paris last night.
In a speech delivered at a ceremony attended by students and relatives of Samuel Paty, killed in front of his school last Friday, Mr. Macron pledged to stand firm against religious fundamentalism. “We are going to continue this fight for freedom and reason, of which you are now the face in France,” he declared during the ceremony held in the courtyard of the Sorbonne University. “In France, the Enlightenment never goes out.”
Mr Paty was killed by an 18-year-old Islamist after being criticized by Muslims for showing his 9th grade class
