Ole Gunnar Solskjaer accepts he is under pressure as Man Utd enter crucial race

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has admitted all the pressure should be on him as he begins a series of games that will decide his fate at Manchester United. United, who face seven matches in 21 days, have had a nightmarish start to the season, with two losses in their opening three Premier League appearances leaving them in 16th place.

The 6-1 dismemberment at home to Tottenham was their biggest loss in nine years, while talks about players losing confidence in Solskjaer and the alarming loss of form of skipper Harry Maguire added to the sense of crisis at United.

“The spotlight should be on me, because I am the manager and I am responsible,” Solskjaer said.

“Last season was also tough, we played nine games and only won the first of two nine games, which was tough.

“But if you’re part of Manchester United as a player or a team, you’re used to it and you have to be mentally strong. For me, this period is another chance to prove it.

“It’s about being focused for the next game, because I know they are capable of delivering results and climbing the ranks.”

Despite Solskajer’s positive turn, United’s upcoming games are brutal, especially for a formless and confident side who have scored 11 goals in the last three league games.

Following today’s trip to Newcastle, United travel to Paris St Germain, then host Chelsea, RB Leipzig and Arsenal, before moving on to top-of-the-line Turkish champions Istanbul Basaksehir and Everton.

With a shortened pre-season due to their progress in Europe last season, United are well below where they should be, mentally and physically, but there is no respite from the demands of the game.

“Now the players have had internationals and we’re getting that physical form back, now it’s about creating that energy with every game.”

Bruno Fernandes was forced to deny a breakup and locker room break with Solskjaer after being substituted at half-time in the beating by Spurs.

Solskjaer tried to create a siege mentality among his players, saying: “We know, with little luck from the outside, people want to create a division,” Solskjaer said.

“Bruno spoke about it very well the other day – we are united and have to stay together, we cannot listen to everyone on the outside.

“Bruno has lost two league games since returning here in February. It’s been twice in a row, but he’s not used to losing league games.

“Welcome to Manchester United, Bruno, that’s what’s happening. You are everyone’s favorite target if something goes wrong. ”
