Oilers bring back Mike Smith for another season – The Athletic


Edmonton Oilers general manager Ken Holland telegraphed the new signing of goaltender Mike Smith on Friday upon his media availability. Holland spoke of his 2019-2020 tandem of Mikko Koskinen (still under contract) and Smith (a free agent at the time) as providing satisfactory play during the season. In the same discussion on Friday, Holland spoke framed the playoff series against the Chicago Blackhawks, a big disappointment, like a team effort, possibly anticipating a return to Smith’s role in the loss to Chicago.

In truth, the biggest sample, Edmonton’s 2019-20 season, judged Smith just as harshly and suggested the end of his career had come.

Less than 24 hours later, Smith is under contract for another season with the Edmonton Oilers.
