NYC imposed over $ 150,000 in fines on first weekend with new COVID-19 restrictions

NEW YORK – New York City imposed more than $ 150,000 in fines Friday through Sunday afternoon for violations of the city’s new red, orange and yellow zones, officials said. There were also 62 summons delivered by city officials, including five to non-compliant religious congregations, officials said.

Fines of up to $ 1,000 have been set for those refusing to wear a face mask or social distancing. Establishments and places of worship could face fines of up to $ 15,000 for violating restrictions on mass gatherings.

The fines come amid a surge in coronavirus cases in several areas of New York City, including one strip in Brooklyn and two sections of Queens.

Large protests erupted in Brooklyn last week after Governor Andrew Cuomo announced new restrictions on schools, businesses and places of worship in areas where infection rates have increased.
