Noel Whelan believes Leeds United winger Ian Poveda could play a ‘vital role’ this season following his physical transformation.
Addressed exclusively to Football insider According to correspondent Dylan Childs, the former Leeds striker and childhood Whites fan, the 20-year-old is working in the gym and starting to thrive under Marcelo Bielsa.
Poveda made his Premier League debut on Saturday when he entered as a half-time substitute against his former Manchester City side.
Bielsa praised the winger after the game and admitted his surprise at his development.
Ask by Football insider what he did with Poveda’s display: “It seems like everyone is coming at the right time.
“We are looking at someone who is very young.
“I thought he was a bit light when he first came to the club and I thought he needed to get stronger, to develop a bit more in the gym.
“You could see when he came the other day that he had a point to prove to Manchester City and Pep Guardiola.
“He looked strong, he looked aggressive right away when he came into the game.
“He was very involved. There was good nutmeg on the right side. He was very direct, showed his pace, his skills and his tight control.
“He looks like someone who matures really very quickly under Marcelo Bielsa and who is going to be an integral part of the team this season.
“I can’t wait to see him more because if he can have that kind of impact in every game, coming off the bench he’s going to cause a lot of trouble for defenders with his ability and pace.
