The Big Little Lies star has opened up about her time filming the Stanley Kubrick movie, Eyes Wide Shut, which was released shortly before Nicole and Tom’s time ended.
The last sexually charged movie they made together was followed by Nicole filing for divorce from Tom, 58, but reflecting on this time with The New York Times, she said there was too much to read in the movie at the time.
Nicole said that her character’s speech in the movie about infidelity and that she was “ready to give it all up” was in fact fictitious and not based on any facts about their marriage.
Nicole opened up at that point, saying, “I sure haven’t seen him like that. We married happily.
“We were going to go kart races after these scenes. We rented a place and went for a run at three in the morning.
“I don’t know what else to say. Maybe I don’t have the ability to look back and dissect it. Or I am not prepared to do it. “
They announced their separation in 2001 and divorce followed shortly thereafter.
Tom and Nicole continue to co-parent their two adopted children, Isabella, 27, and Connor, 25.
Nicole has since married singer Keith Urban in 2006 and they have two daughters together – Sunday, 12, and Faith, 9.
Nicole said that she and Tom bonded with Kubrick on the set and that they were often joined by Connor and Isabella, while they were shooting the movie.
She said of Kubrick: “We loved working with him. We shot this [film] during two years.
“We had two children and mostly lived in a trailer in the field, making spaghetti because Stanley sometimes liked to eat with us.
“We were working with the greatest filmmaker and learning about our lives and enjoying our lives on set. “
Nicole continued, “We would say, ‘When is this going to end? We went there thinking it was going to take three months, which turned into a year, a year and a half.
“But you go, as long as I surrender to what it is, I’m going to have an amazing time.”
“Stanley, he wasn’t crooked. It was tough in that it pulled a lot. ”
“But I would sit on the floor of his office and talk, and we would watch animal videos. He said animals are so much nicer than humans.
“Although I remember we were watching a wildlife thing where you saw the lion chasing an antelope, and he could barely look at it. Interesting, isn’t it?
