Jerry Jones usually has to be furious about changes being made to the Dallas Cowboys organization, and he’s certainly lost his temper this week. In the same interview on Tuesday in which Jones rained fire on a local radio host telling him to “shut up and let me answer” pressed for a potential lack of leadership in the locker room, the Hall of Fame owner also promised there would be “staff changes” on the defensive end of the ball. Hours later Everson Griffen was traded to the Detroit Lions and a day later Dontari Poe and Daryl Worley were released. Two-time Pro Bowler Poe was released due to his weight and playing on the court, according to Craig Mortensen of ESPN.

The Cowboys had been trying to trade the three for several days now as the Nov. 3 trade deadline approached, sources told CBS Sports after the team’s 25-3 loss to the soccer team. from Washington in week 7, but of the three, only Griffen had any sort of value in the commercial market. Jones and Co. received a conditional sixth-round selection for 2021 in exchange for Griffen who could advance to a fifth round, but there was no taker for Poe and Worley.

Considering how badly the two have played during their seven-game stint with the Cowboys, it’s hardly surprising.

Griffen leaves the Cowboys with 2.5 sacks on the season and his improvement over the last two games could not have been better timing as the Cowboys attempted to offload the remainder of his one-year contract to earn a ceiling space that continues until 2021, and to pave the way for Randy Gregory and fifth-round pick Bradlee Anae to get more playing time. It’s a very different storyline with Poe and Worley, given that the former was a weekly turnstile for running backs and the latter was essentially benched due to consistently poor play in the secondary.

Poe signed a two-year contract this offseason worth $ 8.5 million, while Worley was on a one-year contract worth $ 3 million. Without a dance partner for either, the savings on Poe drop to $ 1.19 million and only $ 969,000 on Worley after their respective releases.
