New York’s plastic bag ban, delayed by COVID, in court, goes into effect Monday

NEW YORK (WABC) – The plastic bag ban in New York City goes into effect Monday, after a seven-month hiatus. The mandate went into effect on March 1, but was not enforced, in part because of the coronavirus pandemic and of a lawsuit brought by the manufacturers of plastic bags. The New York State Supreme Court overturned the trial in August.

A press release from DEC says New Yorkers use about 23 billion plastic bags per year.

Each bag is only used for 12 minutes on average and about 85% of the plastic ends up in landfills, recycling machines, waterways and streets.
