Paul WS Anderson is good at one thing: making indulgent video game movies with cult followers. Monster hunter seems to follow suit. On a new panel at New York Comic-Con 2020, Anderson showed up to talk about his movies and share what we all want to see: monster fights.
During the panel, speaking to Polygon’s Matt Patches, Anderson discussed the filming process for the film, which included a jet-set filming tour across Africa to capture scenic views worthy of the series’ striking natural havens. of games, a shoot that involved intensive use. practical effects to compensate for fully digital monsters. Monsters, of course, are still the star of the show, created during months of painstaking digital creation. These monsters, Anderson said, were the backbone of his interest in the series. And a lot of effort has gone into making these monsters authentic for gaming as well, to the point of getting feedback on specific animations from the game developers.
Speaking of which: Anderson has also created a striking new clip of one of the movie’s monsters, which is directly adapted from the game. In it, Milla Jovovich’s crew has an encounter with a Grand Rathalos, one of Monster hunter the most intimidating and deadly creatures in the world. It’s not going well. To face it, she will have to meet the other big star of the film: Giant sword.
