Welcome to Midnight Mania!
Day after day, we seem to get closer to the official announcement of Conor McGregor’s fight.
The model is somewhat well established at this point. McGregor retires and says some wild behind-the-scenes stuff to keep himself in the headlines (like THIS!), Inserting himself into an unlimited number of potential matches. Eventually, one option becomes more likely than the others as behind-the-scenes negotiations continue.
Enter Dustin Poirier.
“The Diamond” is a former interim lightweight champion and former victim of McGregor’s rise to featherweight. The current top contender has been chasing a rematch for ages now, and maybe he’s finally close to that goal. The two have publicly discussed and agreed to an “MMA charity fight” … whatever the means.
The UFC is unlikely to be staged from a profit, however, and today, Brett Okamoto d’ESPN revealed on Twitter that the UFC sent McGregor a fight-for-fight deal. “According to sources, the UFC officially offered Conor McGregor a fight against Dustin Poirier this week, as Dana White told Barstool Sports today. I sent a fight agreement on Tuesday, I’m told. DOES NOT MEAN THE FIGHT IS DONE. Not even close. But a contract was offered for the fight.
As mentioned in the Tweet, this is far from official confirmation. There are still plenty of other options for McGregor, ranging from Manny Pacquiao to Tony Ferguson. For now, however, we have to assume that McGregor vs Poirier 2 is the most likely match.
Johnny Walker versus Michel Pereira in combat is precisely what we all expected.
Some madman on Reddit lost a bet on the main event of UFC 253 and ate a bunch of canned asparagus (which I didn’t even know was a thing) as punishment!
Esther Lin is leaving MMA Fighting (and maybe sports?), So this thread of her most famous shots is worth the click!
I love MMA and Pokémon crossbreeds. What is your favorite evolution from Alistair Overeem?
Israel Adesanya has two weeks in quarantine to sit alone and make memes about Paulo Costa (and maybe others that bother him, like Jon Jones?). Things could get interesting!
An ultra-clean fire department:
Briefs, rips and knockout clips
Mahasamuth really capitalized on his opponent’s probe perfectly in this exchange.
Saenchai’s clip from his recent fight I posted last week wasn’t as detailed as this one …
Now is the perfect time for some Michael Chandler highlights!
