“Damn, it’s hot, I’m taking it off,” he said, much to the surprise of the show’s panelists and host Nick Cannon.
“We’ve lost control, it’s the Gremlin show!” Cannon said, calling for help. But by then it was too late. “He’s a ‘masked singer’ first,” Cannon said. “We couldn’t vote, the other people couldn’t get out.”
Rourke has chosen not to make any press regarding his release, further leaving everyone involved in awe. Asked about the show by Cannon why he wanted to do “The Masked Singer,” Rourke said, “I was in the neighborhood. I love the show, I watched four episodes and they asked me if I would be interested, so I watched from the very beginning and all that shit.
In “The Masked Singer”, Rourke-as-the-Gremlin performed “Stand By Me” by Ben E. King. Rourke dedicated the performance to his buddy Willy DeVille, a musician who died in 2009. “It meant a lot because this song was sung by one of my all-time best friends, Willy DeVille,” he says. “Willy passed away a long time ago and I miss him a long time. I think the other night, for some reason, Willy sent me this song.
Although they didn’t give their final guesses – Rourke took off his mask before getting to this point – but earlier panelist Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg guessed it correctly. Other names that were guessed included Jerry Lee Lewis (Robin Thicke) and Stone Cold Steve Austin (Ken Jeong).
“Greetings, I’m Gremlin,” the character said in his packet of clues. “Despite my turbulent history, I can be really charming. A true romantic. You may have heard that I can be a bit combative. But I also have a soft side. I love all the animals, the long pirouettes on the beach, and hitting worthy opponents with foreign objects for maximum impact. I also like to cook. Maybe you like what you see. I would love to have you for dinner. I mean, for dinner. But first, snuggle up while I serenade you.
New this season, the show’s panelists are also competing for a “Golden Ear” trophy based on their first impressions of each masked artist – and in week one, Thicke and Scherzinger took the lead because they all two chose Busta Rhymes. But in week two, it wasn’t revealed if anyone’s first impressions were accurate (but it’s questionable).
The episode’s Group B costumes also included Baby Alien, Crocodile, Whatchamacalit, Seahorse, and Serpent.
Here are the other competitors and their performances during the second week:
Song: “It’s my life”, by Bon Jovi
Force: “Hard skin”
Weakness: “Quick to snap”
Voice off: “Welcome to the lovers’ lagoon, where I will soon be singing and making you swoon.” Becoming a crocodile was a natural selection, because I am the happiest in the water. And since I was a kid, growing up in Hollywood surrounded by heartache and instability, I was forced to develop thick skin. But crocodiles have a bad reputation for being cold-blooded, when in fact inside I’m a warm, sensitive creature who just wants to be loved in return. And I can’t wait to share my hidden talent as I make a loud noise.
Devine le panel: Jon Hamm, Nick Lachey, Donnie Wahlberg
Song: “Faith”, by George Michael
Force: “Interstellar cuteness”
Weakness: “Cranky at nap time”
Voice off: “It’s time for my rebirth. See, I’ve been stuck in second gear for a while. Back when I was the cream of the crop circle, I was in a theater every week. Even beamed on the Tony Awards stage, baby. But before long, I became a second thought, lost in space. So I opened my baby’s eyes to other passions. Navigate a new road where, as a master of puppets, my destiny is in my hands. And I have to put the golden mask in my crib.
Le panel suppose: Ralph Macchio, David Schwimmer, Freddie Prinze Jr.
Song: «Only Girl (In the World)», par Rihanna
Force: “To make a sensation”
Weakness: “Dangerous undercurrents”
Voice off: “Hi partners, you are not from these regions, you are. You know, all my life I have felt trapped by my insecurities and shyness, too scared to release the fire that was burning inside. And you can call me melodramatic but sometimes I felt lost in this world. As if I was always swimming upstream. But here, I get the chance to stop playing tug of war with myself and finally expose the fearless diva from within. Beneath this camouflaged armor, I harness the power of the seahorse to show shiny new sides of myself. Leaving behind all my previous fears on this path to glory.
Panel riddles: Halsey, Hailee Steinfeld, Bebe Rexha
Song: “I wish”, by Skee-Lo
Force: “Eyes on the prize”
Weakness: « Tangles »
Voice off: “I am magical, mythical, jazzy, snazzy and full of pizazzy. You see, people think I’m a shy guy. Mainly because I let others absorb my spotlight. As a shining furball, I can shine on my own, for this world is wide open. I can dance with the stars, surf candy, buzz with the bees, and swing from the keys. It’s time to turn the world around. Because I don’t want to be hair today, gone tomorrow.
Guess the Panel: Swizz Beatz, Dame Lillard, Tyler the Creator
Song: “I’ll be (500 Miles)” by The Proclaimers
Weakness: “High five”
Voice off: “Sup, folks? It took a series of miraculous events to get here. Starting with when I was young. Mischievous and sly, a disturbing sly. I was crawling furiously towards a path of destruction. But my pops saved me by sending me a one-way ticket away from the bad crowds and on a path to success. Light a fire in me to aspire to new heights. I didn’t want to cause pain but to heal the pain. And I hope to uplift everyone’s morale tonight.
Le panel devine: John Legend, Daveed Diggs, Leslie Odom Jr.
