Liverpool 0-0 Arsenal
Arsenal win 5-4 on penalties
League Cup, Fourth Round, Anfield
October 1, 2020
There have been a few surprise inclusions to the Liverpool squad, with Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk included and Harry Wilson making his first start for the club almost four years after making his debut as a sub.
Diogo Jota also made his first start for the Reds, after two under-appearances last week.
Xherdan Shaqiri, who impressed on the last lap at Lincoln but is now subject to transfer interest, was not included.
Arsenal had the best of early trades with Eddie Nketiah being turned down by a smart save from Adrian, but the first half itself lacked real opportunities for both sides.
Liverpool’s first shot on target only came when Curtis Jones hit a weak effort with his left foot from a distance in the 34th minute.
The first-half stoppage almost saw the breakthrough halted, when Jota’s header was parried by the Arsenal keeper and Takumi Minamino’s follow-up rocked the crossbar.
Mi-temps: Liverpool 0-0 Arsenal
A change of plan saw Klopp make no half-time substitutes, with the manager saying ahead of the game that he plans to trade Van Dijk at the break. The center-back was eventually replaced by Joe Gomez on time, with Salah starting for Divock Origi.
You could have been forgiven for forgetting that Salah was even on the pitch, and his use in this competition seemed odd.
Liverpool were more offensive in the second half and passed close by Van Dijk and Jota ahead of the hour, but missed the breakthrough.
A low shot from Grujic, which impressed throughout, then an effort from Jota forced Leno to make two saves as Liverpool continued to step up the pace.
Arsenal’s best chance came when Holding had a free header from a corner but Adrian made a smart save to turn it down.
After nine goals in last week’s League Cup draw at Lincoln, it was the opposite of such excitement and looked destined for penalties for long stretches of the second half.
This match last season at the same stage of the competition ended in a 5-5 draw and here it is again kicking but this time with a different outcome and much less drama in advance.
Divock Origi and Harry Wilson saw their penalties saved, with Wilson proving decisive.
