Legendary broadcaster ‘Doc’ Emrick retires

Mike “Doc” Emrick hangs up his microphone. The 74-year-old is leaving the broadcast booth after a play-by-play career stretching back to 1973, Emrick and NBC Sports said on Monday in a shared statement.

“I hope I can manage my retirement well,” Emrick told the New York Post on Sunday, “especially since I’ve never done it before. But I have just been extremely lucky for 50 years. And NBC has been so good to me, especially since the pandemic, when I was allowed to work from home in a studio set up by NBC.

“Now in my golden years, it just seemed like the right time.

“Plus, I have now accumulated enough loyalty miles not to go anywhere.”

Emrick received the Hockey Hall of Fame’s Foster Hewitt Memorial Award in 2008 and the NHL’s Lester Patrick Award in 2004.

In 2011, Emrick became the first broadcaster inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame.
