Leafs trade, sign 2 and drop the cap – Key takeaways – The Athletic

So far it’s been a busy little Thanksgiving weekend for the Maple Leafs my friends. Let’s list the moves for the day, one by one, in order of importance.

After TJ Brodie and Wayne Simmonds were signed on the first day of free agency Friday, the following happened on day 2:

1. The Leafs have transferred Andreas Johnsson and his full salary of $ 3.4 million (for three more years) to the Devils.

2. They hired veteran defenseman Zach Bogosian for a year at $ 1 million.

3. They added 22-year-old winger Joey Anderson as the only return for Johnsson.

4. They signed deep center Travis Boyd for a league minimum one year ($ 700,000).

5. Ilya Mikheyev, a restricted free agent, has requested arbitration.

Three players inside, one player outside. A much needed ceiling space created. And some shuffling at key depth positions that we knew was coming after further seismic moves on Friday.

Let’s start with Johnsson and the ceiling situation…
