It’s been about a month since Dax announced he had relapsed, but Kristen insisted he was “really doing great”.
In a Zoom interview with Ellen, Kristen says, “He’s doing really, really well… Everyone has their own demons.
“Sometimes it’s anxiety and depression. Sometimes it’s drug addiction.
Kristen said she was proud that her husband was honest about what happened because now they can find a way back to where he is.
She continued, “What I love most about Dax is… that he was able to tell me and say to us and say, ‘We need a different plan.’
“We have a plan: if he has to take medication for any reason, I have to administer it. But he said, “We need a stronger plan. “”
Kristen added that Dax told her, ‘I was hesitant. I have to do some kind of emotional work to figure out why I wanted to use it again. “”
Kristen said she admired Dax for being “addicted to growth” and continued to say, “He’s addicted to evolution.
“He was like, ‘I don’t want to risk this family and I did, so let’s put some new things in place to make sure that doesn’t happen again.’ ”
Kristen said she and Shepard were “going back to therapy” and “would continue to support him because he was so worth it”.
Dax had revealed his relapse during the September 25 episode of Armchair Expert, titled “Day 7”.
He said he used pain relievers after a motorcycle accident and just treating his father’s cancer diagnosis was enough to tip the scales again.
Dax said: “So eight years of sobriety, I haven’t done a single fishy thing. There was nothing gray.
“I immediately called my sponsor and said, ‘I’m in a lot of pain and have to work all day, and we have friends who have Vicodin.’ And he said, “Okay, you can take a couple Vicodins to get through the day at work, but you’ve got to go to the doctor, and you’ve got to get a prescription, and you’ve got to get the prescription dispensed to Kristen.”
There was “no problem” with this arrangement initially, but when given the responsibility of giving her father his medication, the urge to take more painkillers turned out to be too strong.
He continued, “So I give him a bunch of Percocet and then I go, I have a prescription for that, and I had a motorcycle accident, and I’m going to take some too. ”
Shepard recalled that he “probably took what my other prescription was twice.”
He confessed to taking Kristen the pills the next day and she said, “You clearly have to call someone from AA, but I would say you fucked up that accident, you got high with your dad, keep it moving.
“You don’t need to redefine it. You haven’t wasted eight years, which was so heartwarming. ”
But Dax admitted that he started to change when he was taking the medicine and “then I get hurt again”.
He explained that he started buying his own pills and then lying to people around him.
It was then that he realized he needed to stop.
