In the middle of Grey’s Anatomy Season 16, Alex ghosts Jo, with everyone at the Gray Sloan Memorial. Fans speculated on the worst, as many viewers believed Alex wouldn’t just pack his bags and leave without saying goodbye. But that’s exactly what happened.
At the beginning of Grey’s Anatomy Season 16 Episode 16 – titled “Leave a Light On” – Alex sent letters to Jo, Meredith Gray (Ellen Pompeo), Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) and Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.). Alex reconnected with his ex-wife, Izzie Stevens (Katherine Heigl), when he reached out to Meredith’s co-workers for her medical licensing hearing. But Izzie wasn’t the only person he found.
In the end, Izzie used the embryos she made with Alex when she had metastatic melanoma. She gave birth to twins named Eli and Alexis. Alex therefore decided to leave Jo for Izzie and her children. Now he lives on a farm in Kansas.
Meanwhile, Alex left Jo with signed divorce papers. But despite the grief, Jo was able to move forward with her life as Grey’s Anatomy Season 16 continued. Jo also invited her resident, Levi Schmitt (Jake Borelli), to move in with her.
