Khabib Nurmagomedov submits Justin Gaethje to UFC 254, announces retirement

Khabib Nurmagomedov sobbed in the middle of the octagon after his UFC 254 lightweight title defense against Justin Gaethje on Saturday.

It was Nurmagomedov’s first fight and the first victory since his father, trainer and mentor Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov died in July after coronavirus following heart surgery in May. The UFC’s best pound-for-pound emotional fighter was reduced to tears after forcing Gaethje to submit.

“God gave me everything,” Nurmagomedov said.

Nurmagomedov said after the fight that it was his last fight in the UFC. He put his gloves in the octagon to signify his decision.

Fans who watched UFC 254 reacted to the victory.

Gaethje had a few chances to do damage to Nurmagomedov. Nurmagomedov beat Gaethje at the end of the first round but was saved by the bell. Nurmagomedov quickly put Gaethje in a triangular strangulation.

Nurmagomedov resigns and leaves the championship opens the division. Gaethje, Tony Ferguson, Dustin Poirier, Dan Hooker, Paul Felder and even Conor McGregor are all potential fighters who can compete for the belt in the coming months and into 2021.

Nurmagomedov finished his professional MMA career 29-0.
