Justice Department Steps Up Investigation into New York Nursing Home Deaths

NEW YORK – The Justice Department is dramatically expanding an investigation that could determine whether New York is underestimating coronavirus deaths among nursing home residents.Demand for data from hundreds of private facilities ramps up pressure on Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo after months of criticism that the state’s official tally of 6,722 long-term care deaths is likely under -estimated by the thousands.

This is because New York, unlike almost every other state, only counts residents who died on nursing home property and not those who died after being taken to a hospital.

A spokesperson for Cuomo called the days of the request a politically motivated “sham”.
