NEW YORK – With his voice aching as he sang passionately on the piano, John Legend dedicated his performance at the 2020 Billboard Music Awards to his wife Chrissy Teigen, who recently announced that she had miscarried.

Prior to singing the song “Never Break” – which includes the lyrics “we’ll never break” – the caption told viewers, “It’s for Chrissy.”

Earlier this month, Teigen wrote a heartbreaking social media post explaining that she and Legend drove home from the hospital without a baby. It’s unreal. ”

“John, it was so beautiful,” host Kelly Clarkson said after Legend’s pre-recorded performance. “All my love for you and Chrissy.”

Wearing a face mask at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles – which was empty – Billie Eilish took home several Billboard Awards, including Best Album.

Eilish entered Wednesday’s show with 12 nominations, winning two at the midpoint of the three-hour event broadcast live on NBC.

“Thank you to all the women who came before me and led the way. I love you, ”she said after winning Best Female Artist.

Eilish, 18, also told viewers: “Please vote. Please wear a mask. Please wash your hands. Be careful. Take care of yourself. ”

Lizzo wore a black dress with “vote” printed on it. She gave an encouraging speech, asking viewers to find their voice and not change to meet societal standards.

“I just want to say that I have given a lot of thought to repression and the voices that refused to be suppressed. And I wonder, “Would I be standing here right now if it weren’t for the big black women who refuse to have their voices suppressed?” “And I just want to say that now, if you’re at home watching this and considering changing to feel worthy, it’s your sign to stay true to who you are,” Lizzo said on scene after winning the award for best selling song artist.

“Let me tell you something – when people try to remove something, it’s normally because that thing has the power. They are afraid of your power. There is power in who you are. There is power in your voice. So whether it’s through music, protest, or your right to vote, use your power, use your voice, and refuse to be suppressed.

Other winners included Lil Nas X, who was also on hand to accept the Top Hot 100 song for “Old Town Road,” which set the most weeks record at number 1. After his performance, Luke Combs was named Best Country Artist and offered positive words to his fans and the team working on the awards show.

“I know what everyone has been through so much this year. I want to thank the team who are working on this show tonight because they’ve been through some crazy things to make this happen for you guys. I hope everyone stays safe at home, ”he said.

Other artists included Post Malone, Alicia Keys, Kane Brown, Khalid, Swae Lee, Sia and Brandy, who sang a mix of her hits. Some of the performances were live, while others were pre-recorded due to the coronavirus pandemic. This year’s ceremony was originally scheduled to take place in April but has been postponed due to the pandemic.

Host Kelly Clarkson kicked off the show by singing “Higher Love” by Steve Winwood, which became a dance hit last year after Whitney Houston’s cover of the song was remixed by the Norwegian DJ-producer. Kygo and became an international success. Clarkson was joined by drummer Sheila E. and the a cappella group Pentatonix for the performance of the song, which earned Houston a posthumous nomination for Best Dance / Electronic Song. Houston died in 2012.

All-star K-pop BTS – which currently holds the top two spots on the Billboard Hot 100 this week with “Dynamite” and the “Savage Love” remix, starring Jawsh 685 and Jason Derulo – will also perform. Others are set to perform like Bad Bunny, Doja Cat, En Vogue, Demi Lovato and SAINt JHN. Country music icon Garth Brooks will receive the Icon Award from Cher, and rapper-activist Killer Mike will receive the Change Maker Award.
