John Cooney handed the recall to Ireland ahead of France test

John Cooney was called up to the Ireland squad for the Six Nations final against France in Paris on Saturday.

The Ulster scrum-half will provide additional cover after Jamison Gibson-Park reported a hamstring strain following the 50-17 win over Italy in Dublin on Saturday.

Form number nine

Cooney was number nine in form in the country at the end of 2019 and early 2020, helping his province advance to the Champions Cup quarter-final, but he has struggled since the restart.

As a result, Andy Farrell ditched the 30-year-old ahead of the year-end international campaign, but now he has another chance to impress.

Meanwhile, center Garry Ringrose’s absence due to a facial injury has been confirmed and a decision on Keith Earls’ fitness will be made in the coming days.

Earls is finishing his rehabilitation program at IRFU CHP and a decision on his availability will be made this week.
